OTB Club

Yes it's true, I am a PROUD member of this club. Read on and I will tell you how I joined...

The place, Mohawk Mountain in Cornwall Connecticut. In the winter a ski resort, in Spring, Summer and Fall, they allow mountain bikes. In fact they even offer lift rides to the top. We decided to ride to the top. I'll admit it, I'm not in shape, nor am I built for aerobic activity. My physical stats might tell you more... 5'11", 240 pounds,Chest-49", Waist-38". I used to lift weights, and you know when they say that muscle CAN'T turn into fat, that's BULL! Mine did...

Anyway, after riding for a while in the rain, we finally got to the top of one of the ski runs. Funny thing about gravity and the extra mass I carry... I can really get cruisin'. So I did, without thinking I just pointed the bike down hill. Remember I said we were riding in the rain? This was before V-brakes, these were good old cantilevers, completely useless when wet and traveling at 25 mph! Remember I said it was a ski mountain? You don't see them on a pretty winters day when the slopes are covered with the white stuff, but they have these pretty deep drainage ditches running across the mountain! Of course there were signs down at the lodge, and probably right before them on the mountain, but of course I didn't read them. You probably think that it was one of those ditches that did me in? Nope. Believe it or not, I was able to wheelie over the ditch! It was the rocky...really rocky, section that followed.

My bike started bucking, Bang! Bang! Bang! Bang!, I still held on, but it got even steeper. After asking myself, "What the Hell is wrong with you?", my front wheel taco'd (bent in half) which sent me, you guessed it, OVER THE BARS! Ugh. I didn't really tumble, I pretty much just catapulted over the bike, and like a lawn dart, plunged head and shoulder into the ground. No injuries except for a few gashes. I was able to "caveman" the front wheel into somewhat a round shape, to ride to the bottom, get the bike fixed, and ride another day.
