The Big Kahuna Knows…
|
After what seemed to be unrelated incidents (most of all support from my wife!), the Big Kahuna decided to start skateboarding again! It was a combination of my son, a trip to Venice Beach, CA (Dogtown) and a video of a colleague of mine on the OLD MAN SKATES website. The Big Kahuna now rides a Deathbox Jay Adams, Grind King Jay Adams Trucks and a Bulldog Skates Shogo Kubo wheels. That truck wheel combo is too wide for that board, so I'll be getting some new wheels.
| It turns out that this is going
to be harder than I thought. I'm
still determined to ride, so I'm re-teaching myself. As you can see from the
pics, my amplitude is low, low, low. My son is really enjoying
it because my presence has inspired him to try bigger and better things. So far I
have mastered the backside kick turn and riding fakie on ramps. My son can now drop in from virtually
anywhere in the park. |

| After exchanging some emails with the folks at Sector9 Skateboards, they decided to put images if my son and I skating. Very cool being on a commercial public site. See us at http://www.sector9.com/riders_friends4.htm or go to http://www.sector9.com and navigate to the riders section and select "friends", we're on the fourth page. |
History

The Big Kahuna was just a little Kahuna when he rode his first skateboard. That was about 1975. I was in 8th grade. It was a solid oak Nash Hotfoot measuring 22"x5.25". |
|
|
From sidewalk surfing I graduated to vertical ramp riding. I rode most of the parks on LI including, The Concrete Wave, Northport, Sayville Fiberwave. The most incredible park was Cherry Hill, NJ. My board of choice was a Dogtown 10" 10-ply Wes Humpston Bulldog. Man oh man that board was Sa-Weet! It measured 31"x10" and had GullWing Trucks and Dogtown Conical Wheels. Here's a pic of one just like mine. Believe it or not, this board went for $1000+ on Ebay. |

In this picture, skateboarding reached its size limit for being really rideable. I rode one of the Dogtown Bigfoots, and it was definitely wild. This board was 12" wide! |
|
|
Another ride in my quiver is a Sector 9 Phoenix Longboard. It measures 44"x10". This thing really cruises. I fell in love with Longboard Skateboarding the first time I rode it. The idea of Long boarding originated from Longboard Surfing. Much of the style and many of the maneuvers in Longboard Skateboarding reflect that heritage. (Check out the killer Drop Knee turn in the pics!) |
